Our neighbourhood

A cleaner Stepney, together

Stepney is full of everyday places worth looking after, from local streets to the spaces that connect neighbours. Our monthly clean-up gives people a simple way to spend time outside, meet others and make a visible difference together.

We gather at Stepney City Farm before the co-ordinator explains the plan for the session. If you are new, come near the start so you can sign in, pick up your kit and join an experienced volunteer. You do not need to know the area or have litter-picking experience.

First time? You’re welcome

How the litter pick works

You do not need your own litter picker or previous experience. The WaSh Wombles co-ordinators provide the kit and a short safety briefing.

Meet and sign in

Find the co-ordinator at the meeting point. If it is your first time, aim to arrive near the start.

Collect your kit

Pick up a litter picker, bag and hoop, gloves and high-visibility vest. Listen to the safety guidance and the suggested route.

Pick, return, sign out

Work at a pace that suits you. Bring back your collected rubbish and equipment, then sign out with the co-ordinator.

What to wear: comfortable closed-toe shoes and, if possible, long sleeves and trousers. Follow the co-ordinator’s advice and leave sharp or hazardous items untouched.

Good to know

Questions about Stepney litter picking

Is the clean-up held inside the farm?

The farm is our meeting point. The co-ordinator will explain which nearby areas the group will cover during that session.

Where should I go when I arrive?

Go to the big barn in the centre of Stepney City Farm and look for the event co-ordinator or volunteers helping with sign-in.

What if I can only stay for part of the session?

That is fine. The volunteer guidance says you should pick only for as long as you feel comfortable. Please return your kit and sign out when you finish.

We don’t grumble. We Womble.

Come along, meet the neighbours and help make Tower Hamlets a cleaner place, one piece of litter at a time.
